AreasacrossChinaandCaliforniaarepioneeringnature-basedsolutions,accordingtotheCalifornia-ChinaClimateInstituteatUCBerkeley.ItservesasCalifornia'smainliaisonforinformation-sharingandcommunicationunderthememorandum.Theinstitutewaslaunchedin2019byBrown.
Chinahasimplementedanumberofnature-basedactivitiesoverthepast20years,expertsattheinstitutesaidinablog.Oneexampleofanature-basedsolutionlaunchedbyChinaistheEcologicalConservationRedlinesinitiative,expertssaid.
ThememorandumrenewedapriorversionsignedbyformerCaliforniagovernorJerryBrownin2018.
Forthefirsttimeatthebiodiversityconvention,therewillbeapavilionfocusedentirelyontheactionsofsubnationalandlocalgovernments,aswellastheopportunitiesavailabletothem.
China'sMinisterofEcologyandEnvironmentHuangRunqiuandCaliforniaGovernorGavinNewsommetinavirtualmeetinginApriltosignamemorandumofunderstandingtoadvancecooperationoninitiativestoachievecarbonneutrality,expandcleantransportationandacceleratenature-basedsolutions.
Lowertiersofgovernmentincountriesareplayinganimportantroleinboostingbiodiversity,expertssaidaheadofaUnitedNationsconferenceaimedatincreasingprotectionforthenaturalworld.
